Expel Mohiuddin from AL, demand rivals
A faction of Chittagong city Awami League yesterday demanded expulsion of the unit President and ex-mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury for his 'authoritarian activities'.
Some leaders loyal to the unit Joint Secretary and Primary and Mass Education Minister Afsarul Amin and Vice President Nurul Islam MP made the call at a meeting.
Afsarul said, “We have gathered here at a very crucial stage of the party's city unit to take some decisions, as the party runs according to its constitution.”
“But Chittagong city unit is running according to whimsical attitude of one man (Mohiuddin),” added the mass education minister.
Mohiuddin loyal group in a committee meeting on January 23 issued show cause notices to four of the unit's top leaders including Afsarul Amin.
The notices asked the four leaders why they should not be expelled from the committee. The leaders were blamed for violating party constitution and tarnishing the party image.
Afsarul loyal faction organised yesterday's meeting to know opinions of the grassroots leaders over the issue instead of replying to the show cause notices.
Afsarul said the unit President Mohiuddin and General Secretary Kazi Inamul Hoque Danu cannot hold their posts and issue show cause notices, as the committee lost validity.
Chittagong city AL committee in an executive meeting held at Mohiuddin's residence on January 17 took the decision of issuing the notices.
Allegations in the notices include that the four leaders organised a separate public rally on Laldighi Maidan on January 10 defying the party discipline.
The three other leaders are lawmaker Nurul Islam Bsc, Second Joint Secretary Ibrahim Hossain Babul, and Treasurer and CDA Chairman MA Salam.
Lawmaker Nurul Islam chaired yesterday's meeting where Ibrahim Hossain, Abdus Salam, and grassroots leaders from ward committees also spoke.
