From a Different Angle
Under a drizzling sky, an elderly woman knocks on the window of a car. It is evident from her impoverished looks that she is begging and pleading for money. The weathered appearance of the woman next to the wet window poses a stark contrast to the insulated interior of the car. This common, but nevertheless moving snippet of Dhaka life has been captured in Jessica Islam's photo titled "Knock". Images by Jessica and other young photographers are on display at the Drik Gallery, Dhanmondi in Dhaka.
The '6th Intra East West University Photography Exhibition 2010' has been organised by the Photography Club of the university, known as EWUPC. The six daylong exhibition ends today.
The organisers specified six categories for the photographs. Featured photographs cover a diverse range of subjects.
Ruksana Ali presents a serene landscape tainted by a broken bridge.
Ahmed Shawki's entry called "The Lonesome Night" focuses on a desolate contrast. A sense of urban decay and alienation is remarkable in this photo.
Mahbub Turjo's "Light My Fire" and Aranya Chattopadhyay's "Loknath Bandona" demonstrate the photographers' active imagination.
Among other memorable photographs are Sabil Hoque's "I Face of Soul", which is quite experimental, and Hyder Khan's "Waiting", which shows a young boy seen through a battered train window.
Easel Mortuza's "Blood Coal" is also notable and politically charged.
