<i> Monument built on mass grave </i>
A monument on a mass grave in front of the bridge on Karatoa River in Panchagarh town was inaugurated yesterday.
Divisional commissioner of Rangpur Md. Jasim Uddin Ahamed opened the monument as chief guest.
The inauguration ceremony followed a discussion at the same venue.
Speakers at the function said that there was a camp of Pakistani occupation forces at the spot.
During the Liberation War in 1971 the occupation forces and their collaborators -- razakers and al-Badrs -- brought pro-liberation people from different areas to the camp.
After brutal torture they killed hundreds of people including women and children and buried them there.
Deputy commissioners of seven districts under the division, freedom fighters and local elites were present at the function.
The speakers demanded speedy trail of war criminals who killed innocent people for seeking independence in 1971.
Later a deputy commissioners' conference of Rangpur Division was held at the deputy commissioner's conference room with Md Jasim Uddin in the chair.
Among others, deputy commissioner of Panchagarh Banamali Bhoumick, deputy commissioner of Thakurgaon Muhammad Shaiduzzaman spoke at the conference.
