A musical tribute to Sanjeeb Chowdhury
On the 48th birth anniversary of singer-activist-journalist Sanjeeb Chowdhury, his Dalchhut bandmates organised a music festival titled 'Sanjeeb Utshab'. The festival was held at the Bakultala premises of Faculty of Fine Arts, Dhaka University, on December 25.
Among the highlights of the festival was the release of Dalchhut's fifth studio album “Aay Aamantran”, which features a song written by Sanjeeb and another one composed by him.
Sanjeeb Chowdhury's untimely death, at the age of 45, in 2007 saddened music enthusiasts across the country. In 1996, along with Bappa, he formed the band Dalchhut. "Ahh," "Hridoypur," "Akash Churi" and "Jochhna Bihaar" are the four previous albums by Dalchhut, all of which featured Sanjeeb.
Apart from Dalchhut, the music festival also featured bands Feedback, Nirjhar and Shohortoli. The bands paid tribute to Sanjeeb by performing from their respective repertoire.
“Aay Aamantran” features 11 tracks. The first one titled “Natojanu” is written by Sanjeeb. Some of the songs from the album are “Balika”, “Bidrup”, “Ural Mon” and “Shunno”. The album also features a new composition of the popular patriotic song “Teer Hara Oi Dheuer Sagar”.
Several lyricists such as Marzuk Russell, Julfikar Russell, Shahan Kabandh, Russell O'Neil and Zahid Akbar wrote the rest of the songs. Bappa has composed and arranged music of the songs.
Sanjeeb's seven-year-old daughter Kingbadanti unveiled the cover of the CD at the programme. The album is produced under G-Series and Agniveena.
Sanjeeb's idealistic and meaningful lyrics and Bappa's apt compositions carved a niche for Dalchhut from the very start. Dalchhut also worked with renowned folk artistes and especially recorded songs of Baul Shah Abdul Karim.Sanjeeb was a student of journalism and worked for several dailies and little magazines.
The programme also included reminiscences on the life and works of Sanjeeb by his friends, colleagues and well-wishers. Sanjeeb's widow, Shilpi Chowdhury, was also among them.
