Sylhet: Steps for fair polls
Election Commissioner Sohul Hossain has said army will be deployed on a limited scale in some vulnerable municipalities during the ensuing elections, reports our staff correspondent.
The Election Commissioner said this while talking to newsmen after a meeting on 'law and order during municipal elections' held at Sylhet Circuit House on Saturday last.
He said the Election Commission has taken the decision on deployment of troops, apprehending deterioration of law and order in some of the municipalities.
Elections to 262 out of 310 municipalities across the country will be held between January 12 and 18 and a three-tier security has been planned to ensure smooth polling.
Army will be deployed as strike force and mobile courts led by magistrates will patrol the municipal areas, EC Sohul Hossain said.
"We have already taken various steps to hold free, fair and transparent municipal elections,' Sohul said, adding that the law enforcement agencies will start patrolling the municipal areas before the elections.
Prior to the briefing, Sohul had a meeting with the polling officials of the Sylhet division. Election Commission's Deputy Secretary (administration) Shahjahan Miah and acting deputy election Commissioner of Sylhet division Md Shamsul Alam were present.
Elections to two municipalities in Sylhet district, five in Moulvibazar district, four in Sunamganj district and five in Habiganj district will be held on January 18.
