RU students lock faculty rooms
Students of business studies faculty under 2004-05 and 2005-06 sessions at the university yesterday put all the class rooms of the faculty under lock and key demanding their result under 'indifferent grading system' approved by University Grant Commission (UGC).
They also laid a siege to the faculty dean office for two hours to press home their demand.
Sources said around 300 students of marketing, management, accounting and information system and finance & banking departments under the faculty locked the rooms from 7.00am to 1.00pm.
They brought out a protest procession on the campus and gathered in front of the faculty dean office at around 11.00am to besiege the office.
Students alleged that as per UGC approved new system from 2006-07 session, a student will score 3.75 points getting 'A' grade whereas he will get 3.50 points with same grade under the old system.
They said the new system follows 5 marks difference in a grade whereas in the old grading system it is 10 marks in a grade. The students alleged that they will be deprived of better opportunities in job markets as students of the next batches will secure higher grade points getting the same marks.
Referring to the systems in Dhaka University and Chittagong University, they said both follow the UGC approved new system from 2004-05 session while the RU students are still deprived of it.
The agitating students threatened to continue their agitation until their demand is met. Later the students removed the locks and withdrew their programme at around 1.15pm after getting assurance from the faculty dean Prof Shah Nowaz Ali that he would look into the students demand.
Sources said no classes and examinations of the faculty were held during the agitation.
Prof Shah Nowaz Ali, dean of Business Studies Faculty told this correspondent that they have formed a 12-member committee to place the matter in the upcoming academic council meeting on December 28.
