2009 BDR Mutiny

RSU was aware, but kept mum

A prosecutor of a special court yesterday said the Rifles Security Unit (RSU) did not inform the BDR authorities though it had been aware of some developments towards mutiny.
Instead, the BDR intelligence men themselves took up arms in the mutiny on February 25-26 last year, said Lt Col Atiquzzaman, commanding officer of RSU and prosecutor of the Special Court-7.
The Special Court-7 led by BDR Director General Maj Gen Md Rafiqul Islam framed charges against 113 alleged mutineers of the BDR intelligence wing at the Pilkhana headquarters in the capital.
The court also read out individual charges against 74 of them. One of the accused, Akbar Ali, submitted a bail prayer to the court.
The allegations against the accused are-- leaving the Darbar Hall defying the orders of the then director general, not informing the higher authorities about the preparations they knew were being made for the mutiny, helping to break into the magazine and bury the bodies of slain army officers, instigating and compelling other jawans to take part in the mutiny and damaging the information system of the intelligence unit.
Meanwhile, at the Special Court-9 four witnesses gave depositions and were cross-examined by 31 accused out of 111 of record wing in the BDR headquarters.
The Special Court-9 headed by BDR Dhaka Sector Commander Col Habibul Karim recorded the depositions.
The allegations brought against the 111 include leaving the Darbar Hall, showing solidarity with the mutineers, participating in the mutiny with firearms, not working to prevent the mutiny and failing to control unruly subordinates.
Proceedings of the Special Court-7 and the Special Court-9 were held simultaneously at the Darbar Hall and the new courtroom of 13 Rifle Battalion at Pilkhana.
The Special Court-7 was adjourned until 10:30am today while the Special Court-9 was adjourned until 9:00am on Monday.
