Dinajpur, Sirajganj were freed on this day
Dinajpur and its nearest upazila Biral were freed from the clutches of Pakistani occupation army on this day in 1971.
On December 14 in 1971, valiant freedom fighters hoisted the flag of independent Bangladesh in the upazila town after a nine-month fierce fighting with the Pakistan army.
The Pakistani forces left the district headquarters on this day and the freedom fighters entered the town and burnt Pakistani national flags chanting slogans.
As the news spread, people from the adjacent villages came to the upazila town and rejoiced by chanting slogans 'Joy Bangla' with the freedom fighters.
On March 25 in 1971, the Pakistani forces launched a crackdown on the upazila with the help of its Bangladeshi collaborators.
After the declaration of independence by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on March 7, the freedom fighters along with the villagers formed a protection committee with an aim to keep the district free from any chaos by the Pakistani forces.
But the Bangladeshi collaborators provoked the Pakistani hyaenas to carry out arson attacks, looting and killings of innocent people. The massacre also forced many people to leave the district for safer places as well as seeking refuge in India.
On April 22 morning in 1971, the Pakistani troops shelled heavily from different points and entered the upazila.
The occupation forces with the help of their collaborators conducted massive searches at the houses of the district town, looted valuables and tortured and raped women and young girls.
As cruelty by Pakistani forces and their collaborators climaxed, the freedom fighters made several attacks on them. The fierce fighting intensified further as the Indian forces joined the freedom fighters forcing the Pakistani army to retreat.
On this day in 1971, freedom fighters also cheered victory when they took control of the Sirajganj district town after defeating the Pakistani occupation forces in a fierce battle, reports a correspondent.
On the night of December 13, several groups of freedom fighters led by Mozaffar Hossain, Amir Hossain Bhulu, Shajahan Ali Tara, Aminul Islam Choudhury, Ismail Hossain, Golam Kibria, Ismail Hossain-2, Ishak Ali besieged the strategic points around the town, including Rahamatganj, Mirpur and the bank of Jumuna adjacent to Launch Ghat.
A fierce battle ensued when the valiant freedom fighters launched attacks on the Pakistani soldiers, forcing them to retreat.
In the late hours of that night the Pakistani soldiers gathered at Sirajganj Bazar railway station and left the town for Ishwardi by a train.
