Garo Wangala festival celebrated
The indigenous Garo community of Madhupur Garh region in Tangail and Mymensingh yesterday celebrated their biggest annual festival Wangala.
The traditional event is observed to offer crops to their Gods.
As per an age-old tradition, the Garos never enjoy their crops before offering them to Tatara, creator of the earth; Sushumi, healer of diseases and giver of wealth; and Misi Saljong, giver of crops.
Thousands of Garos, also known as Mandi, and other locals joined the daylong programme on Joynagachha Primary School premises in Madhupur upazila of Tangail.
The opening session featured offerings with a priest imploring the Gods to accept the crops.
Turned out in traditional attire, young Garos embarked on the programme in the morning by singing religious songs and welcoming the guests with flowers and “chu” (homemade beverage).
Food and Disaster Management Minister Abdur Razzak attended the function as the chief guest and American Ambassador in Dhaka James F Moriarty as the special guest.
Ajoy-a-Mre, president of Joinshahi Adivasi Unnayan Parishad, presented the welcome speech.
Tangail DC M Bazlul Karim Chowdhury, Madhupur upazila Chairman Abdul Gafur Montu and female vice-chairman Jastina Nokrek, Madhupur UNO Benzamin Riyazi, Khandakar Shofiuddin Moni, and Babul D' Nokrek, lecturer of Dhaka St Joseph's College also spoke on the occasion.
