1 victim dies at DMCH
One of the injured in the fire that broke out on December 7 at a cigarette lighter factory in Old Dhaka died yesterday at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Doctors at DMCH declared Mohammad Sujan Ali, 30, dead around 6:30pm. They said 42 percent of Sujan's body was burnt in the fire.
In the fire, Sujan's relative Ripon, 28, also suffered burns over 28 percent of his body and is now taking treatment at the burn unit.
The fire broke out when Sujan and Ripon were refilling cigarette lighters inside their rented room on Nazimuddin Road in Bangshal. The room had storage of liquid petroleum and lighter refill canisters.
On October 6, 10 workers were burnt to death at a chemical factory in the capital's Dakkhin (South) Jatrabari. Four others, including three women, were severely injured.
On August 22, two people died in a fire at a chemical warehouse in Lalbagh.
On June 3, 122 people, mostly women and children, were killed and scores hurt in a deadly blaze originated from a chemical store at the densely populated Nimtoli in Old Dhaka.
Though banned by the government after the Nimtoli disaster, storage and trading in combustible chemicals are going on unabated in the old part of the capital.
The government had also directed the traders to move their stock to a safer location by August 17, but to little avail.
