Varun Gandhi to be prosecuted for 'hate speech'
Authorities in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh have given sanction for prosecution of opposition BJP lawmaker Varun Gandhi for his alleged hate speech during Lok Sabha elections last year, a senior official said yesterday.
"The state government gave prosecution sanction against BJP MP Varun Gandhi on November 30 on an FIR registered against him at Kotwali police station in Pilibhit district last year," Secretary (Home) of Uttar Pradesh government Deepak Kumar told reporters in Lucknow.
Charges of promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion and deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings have been brought against Varun Gandhi who is a member of Lok Sabha from Pillibhit in the state.
