Mymensingh, Madaripur, Narail freed on this day
Mymensingh, Narail and Madaripur were freed from the Pakistan occupation forces on December 10.
Our Mymensingh Correspondent reports: Like every year, the people of Mymensingh will celebrate today as 'Mymensingh liberation day'.
Following the crackdown on March 26 in 1971, the occupation Pak Army made several failed attempts to enter Mymensingh town.
On April 17, they engaged in a fierce battle with the freedom fighters at Kalihati in Tangail and managed to set their foot in Mymensingh town on April 22.
Between May and November in 1971, the freedom fighters and the Pakistan army faced a number of encounters at different places of the district and its surrounding areas where both the sides suffered huge casualties.
On December 7, the freedom fighters freed Haluaghat from the occupation army and on December 8, Phulpur and Bhaluka upazilas were freed followed by the liberation of Gouripur, Trishal, Iswarganj and Tarakanda areas.
On December 10, the freedom fighters led by Principal Motiur Rahman, MP, president of Awami League district unit, and Indian allied force entered Mymensingh town and freed it from the occupation of Pakistan army.
Some 125 freedom fighters including students and cultural activists sacrificed their lives in the battle to free the town.
Local unit of Muktijoddha Sangsad built a monument titled Muktijoddha Smriti Soudha on the bank of Brahmaputra River near China-Bangladesh Friendship Bridge in the town in 2000. The magnificent 64-feet high monument depicts all movements related to the independence of the country and sacrifice of the valiant freedom fighters.
Muktijoddha Sangsad Mymensingh unit and Mymensingh liberation and Victory Day Celebration Committee have chalked out weeklong programmes at Chhoto Bazar in the district town to celebrate the victory.
Our Narail Correspondent reports: Narail was liberated from the Pak occupation forces On December 10.
Breaking open the lock of arms treasury, the freedom-loving people of Narail took up arms and joined the armed struggle at the early stages of Liberation War. On April 13, the Pak army from Jessore cantonment advanced to Narail.
With the help of their local collaborators, the occupation army started massacre and torture on women in the area.
On November 24, about 200 hundred Pakistani soldiers with their collaborators surrendered to the freedom fighters in Kalia upazila. On December 9, the freedom fighters attacked the Pakistan army at Water Development Board camp in Narail town. The next morning, the enemy surrendered to the freedom fighters.
In observance of Narail liberation day, Narail district unit of Muktijoddha Sangsad command and other socio-cultural organisations have taken up different programmes.
Our Madaripur Correspondent adds: District administration and Muktijoddha command council have jointly organised different programmes to celebrate 'Madaripur liberation day' today.
On April 24 in 1971, the Pakistani army entered Madaripur. During the following months, freedom fighters engaged in a number of fights with the occupation forces while the barbaric occupation forces tortured and killed a number of freedom-loving people in the district.
The last battle of the area took place near Samaddar Bridge on December 8, 9, and 10. Finally on December 10, Madaripur was freed after a 70-member group of Pakistani army surrendered to Khalilur Rahman, the chief of Khalil Bahini.
