Action against police deaf to stalking victim
Home Minister Sahara Khatun yesterday said action will be taken against the police officers of Barguna Police Station, who remained unresponsive to a complaint of assault filed by a stalking victim's father.
"I have learnt that the victim's (Shormi Akhter) family filed a general diary (GD) before the incident of attack. Why they didn't take the matter seriously and give protection to the girl?", she said, adding that the officer-in-charge (OC) and sub-inspector concerned will have to explain.
She was addressing a discussion on "Formulating Work-plan to Prevent Repression on Women" as the chief guest. Jatiya Mahila Sangstha (JMS) organised the programme at its office.
A stalker wildly assailed Shormi, 18, and her father with a sharp weapon in Barguna on December 4. Critically injured, Shormi, is now being treated at Trauma Centre in the city.
The Women and Children Repression Act alone cannot protect the rights of woman, said Shahara. People from all walks of life should step up for defending women's rights, she added.
Tariqul Islam, acting secretary of the ministry of woman and children affairs, was present at the discussion presided over by JMS Chairman Prof Momtaj Begum.
