Stalker Rony held
Devashish Saha Rony, the prime accused in Chanpa Rani Bhowmik murder case at Madhukhali in Faridpur, was arrested at Jhenidah, yesterday morning.
A special team of law enforcers nabbed Rony from a motor garage at Arabpur in Jhenidah town around 10:30am, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Faridpur Awlad Ali Fakir told journalists.
Rony will be produced before the court after primary interrogation, the SP said at a press conference in his office yesterday afternoon.
The team comprised of Additional Superintendent of Police of Faridpur Subrata Kumar Haldar, Investigation Officer Md Ali Khandaker and Sub-inspector of Detective Branch, Sheikh Abu Bakr.
To journalists, Rony said the killing of Chanpa Rani was not intentional.
“She was like my mother. How could I kill her deliberately?” he said.
Rony said he had been proposing Hira, one of Chanpa's daughters, for the last three months to which she had never consented. Her reluctance had angered him, he said.
“I want the culprit who killed my wife in broad day light be sentenced to death,” Swapan Biswas told The Daily Star.
Abdur Rahman, local lawmaker and Chairman of Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) Ranjit Biswas, among others, were present at the conference.
Earlier the chairman of BSFIC had visited the family of Chanpa Bhowmik and gave Tk 10 thousand for her daughters' education.
Meanwhile different socio-cultural organisations including Bangladesh College Shikkhak Samity, Mohila Parishad, Racine, a local NGO, Faridpur Sugar Mill Workers' Union expressed their satisfaction on hearing the news of Rony's arrest.
They demanded exemplary punishment of both Rony and Rajon, the killers of Chanpa Bhowmik and college teacher Mizanur Rashid, who died after raising their voices against stalking.
Chanpa Rani, 45, an employee of Faridpur Sugar Mill, died after Rony ran his bike over her on October 26 for trying to protect her twin daughters Hira and Mukta from harassment by stalkers.
Earlier, five people had been arrested in this connection.
