At least six people including three siblings sustained severe burn injuries in an explosion at a tin-shed house in Fatullah of Narayanganj early yesterday.
One of the injured told The Daily Star that the explosion occurred due to a leakage in a gas burner inside a kitchen of the house.
Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Biswas Afzal Hossain, however, said it was a bomb explosion that occurred around 3:30am at two tin-shed rooms of a house in Masdair Gabtoli Natun Bazar area.
He also suspected that the injured might have links with a militant outfit as law enforcers found three books on jihad in the rooms.
Shahidur Rahman, inspector of Fatullah Police Station, said a team of explosives experts from the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police visited the spot but did not find any trace of explosives at the rooms.
So, they could not confirm whether any bomb explosion took place at the spot, he added.
The injured were identified as Jewel Hossain, 28, Salauddin Howlader, 28, Bacchu Mia, 25, Abul Hossain Mollah, 30, his brothers Jamal alias Kamal, 32, and Ibrahim Rubel, 24. They are undergoing treatment at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The injured rented the rooms of Abdul Khaleque Shikder.
The roofs of the tin-shed rooms were blown up in the explosion inside the kitchen situated between the rooms.
Injured Salauddin, lying on a hospital bed, said that the gas had been leaking out from a burner inside the kitchen for the last few days. When Bachchu lighted a cigarette near the burner around 3:00am, the huge explosion occurred.
Salauddin, Bachchu and Jewel were staying in their room while Abul Hossain, Jamal and Ibrahim were in the other room at the time of explosion, he said.
The doors and windows of the rooms were closed at the time of explosion, he added.
Project Director of DMCH Burn and Plastic Surgery unit Dr Samanta Lal Sen said, two of the injured sustained 20 to 30 percent burn injuries while the others sustained 45 to 55 percent burn injuries.
