113 people commit suicide in 9 months in Barisal region

Relationship problem, frustration, mental disease main causes

As many as 113 people are reported to have committed suicide in Barisal region in nine months from January to September this year, according to the record at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Seventy percent of the suicide victims were female and 30 percent male, sources said.
Of the suicide victims, 8 were from Barisal City Corporation areas, 20 from Barisal Sadar upazila, 12 from Hizla, 9 from Muladi, 11 from Mehendiganj, 9 from Gournadi, 8 from Agoiljhara, 6 from Banaripara, 11 from Uzirpur, 9 from Bakerganj upazila of Barisal district, 3 from Pirojpur Sadar upazila, 2 from Mathbaria upazila of Pirojpur district, and 5 from Patuakhali district.
Sixty of the 113 suicide victims died after they were taken to hospital.
During this period, over 300 other people attempted to commit suicide and they survived through timely treatment after admission to the hospital, said sources at the forensic department of SBMCH.
Most of the people committed suicide by hanging themselves or taking poison, sleeping pills and most of the suicide victims were 15 to 35 years old, hospital records shows.
Family disputes, extramarital affair, disappointment in love, failure in examination, social humiliation, being emotional with family members, unemployment, physical and mental diseases have been identified as most common causes of suicide.
According to rough estimates as per records at different public hospitals of upazila and district town in the region, on an average daily two patients make suicide attempts, said sources at the office of the director of Barisal divisional health office.
Suicides are committed mainly due to emotional reasons and mental diseases, said SBMCH Registrar Dr Tapan Kumar Saha, also a specialist of mental diseases.
Complexities in socio-economic conditions with the rise of living standard, unemployment, degradation of human and moral values, problem in family relationship and frustration about aim in life lead to increasing incidence of mental disorder among people, he said.
"As mental diseases are not generally taken seriously, condition of patients may deteriorate over time. It requires long-term treatment but specialists and other facilities are not easily available. Kept untreated for long, mental patients may try to commit suicide," he added.
