Change traditional mindset

Outgoing DMP boss urges police

Police personnel should change their traditional mindset about giving information to the press if a corruption free society is to be built.
Outgoing Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner AKM Shahidul Hoque made the comment while addressing the reporters on the occasion of his farewell held at DMP headquarters yesterday.
In a major reshuffle in police administration on Monday, AKM Shahidul Hoque was transferred to the Police Headquarters as additional inspector general of police.
Shahidul Hoque observed that most of the police personnel have a tendency of hiding information from journalists.
He also told his colleagues to share information with the reporters, which is not contrary to national interest.
Real development of a society depends to a great extent on sound relation between journalists and law enforcers, he said adding if common people remain in the dark, there are chances of misunderstanding and confusion.
Negative attitude towards the media is common among the police personnel, Shahidul said adding they police think that the media always run negative reports on police.
He said this is not true. He also referred to some reports recently published and telecast.
Dhaka Reporters Unity President Shamim Ahmed in his speech said, “Division has been made between the press and law enforcers. But, it is time to work together in the interest of the country.”
He said the press is not above the law, so journalists should abide by the law.
Senior DMP officials and journalists were present on the occasion.
