Akhaura land port highway may get Ecnec nod today

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) sits today to consider 10 projects including a road-upgrading project under the US$ 1 billion Indian line of credit to link Akhaura land port with Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet highways.
Ecnec chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will preside over the meeting, 12th in the current fiscal year.
The upgrading of Sarail-Brahmanbaria-Sultanpur-Chinair-Akhaura-Sonarbadi land port project will be implemented at a cost of around Tk 233 crore. The work on the project will be completed by June 2013, said sources at the planning ministry.
The project to be implemented by the Roads and Railways Division will upgrade the existing 35.21 km road to a highway to facilitate export and import activities, create link with the Chittagong Port and the Asian Highway and boost regional trade.
The project activities include 24.79 hectares of land acquisition, excavating 16.67 cubic meter earth to widen the road, construction of 137.370 meter RCC bridges, 102.670 meter culverts, four level crossings and setting 76,000 cubic meter CC blocks including geo textiles.
The other nine projects to be considered in the meeting are establishment of a fashion design and training institute and a basic center for the development of handloom fabrics at a cost of Tk 35.56 crore, development of irrigation areas in greater Dhaka district (2nd
phase) project involving Tk 99.30 crore, rural infrastructure development project for marketing agricultural produces (Tk 299.80 crore), Sirajganj hard point rehabilitation and strengthening project (Tk 66.24 crore), destitute women development programme (VGDUP, revised - Tk 177.15 crore), completing the unfinished works of the old youth training centers (Tk 103.99 crore), upgrading the post graduate colleges at the district headquarters to improve the standard of education (Tk 655.12 crore) and establishment of upazila ICT training and resource center for education (Tk 373.29 crore).
