Quick trial of war criminals demanded
Speakers at Jubo League Chittagong divisional delegates' conference here yesterday demanded quick trial of war criminals.
Chaired by Jubo League central committee acting president Md Omar Faruq Chowdhury, the conference was addressed, among others, by Awami League Organising Secretary and State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Cox's Bazar district Jubo Legue President Md Khorshed Alam.
Terming Jubo League workers as a disciplined force, Nanak said it saddened him when he read news against this force in newspapers.
The state minister said 23 attempts were made on the life of Sheikh Hasina since the killings of Bangabandhu and his family members on August 15, 1975, but the Almighty Allah has saved her.
Comilla Sadar upazila Jubo League president Nuruddin Sikder said the government will have to be accountable to the people if it failed to complete trials of August 21 grenade attack, BDR mutiny, 10 trucks arms haul at Chittagong within the tenure of the present government.
Sitakunda upazila Jubo League president Shahadat Hossain said there were irregularities and corruption in appointment of teachers in primary schools in his area. He alleged that workers and supporters of BNP and Jamaat got jobs as primary school teachers in exchange for money.
About 34 grassroots leaders of the organisation including presidents of Chakoria municipal unit, Chandpur Sadar upazila and Brahmanbaria upazila units spoke, urging the government to contain price spiral of essential commodities, legal action against those involved in tender manipulation, extortion and land grabbing.
More than 800 delegates from 119 upazilas of 14 districts including Brahmanbaria, Feni, Chandpur, Laxmipur, Noakhali, Cox's Bazar, Bandarban and Khagrachhari Hill districts attended the conference.
