Impartial newspaper columns stressed
Newspaper columnists should avoid slanted views and give correct information to enhance quality of their writings.
Some distinguished personalities expressed the opinion at a seminar on ''newspaper columns and the readers'' yesterday.
Media Nagorik Forum (MNF), a civil organisation, arranged the event at Begum Sufia Kamal auditorium of National Museum in the city.
MNF Convener Muhammad Jahangir said readers look for indepth analysis of any event in newspaper columns, which the writers should satisfy.
Nurul Kabir, editor of the daily New Age, urged columnists to write about social disparities and the challenges within.
The language of columns should be easily understandable for the readers, suggested Abdul Kaium, joint editor of the daily Prothom Alo.
According to Dr Ferdaus Azim, chairman of the English department of BRAC University, nowadays many actors and sportspersons are expressing their opinion, but columns should be much more informative.
Ajoy Dash Gupta, associate-editor of the daily Samakal, urged the dailies to publish columns on literature pages to develop literary practice.
