Sun Temple
The Sun Temple of Konark is situated at Konark city in the eastern part of Orissa in India. During our family trip to India, I longed so much to have a glimpse of Sun Temple which is very famous worldwide for its intricate sculptures and carvings. At last, after lots of persuasions and arguments, finally I managed to make my father agree to go to Konark.
The Sun Temple was built by Narsinhadeva-I of Ganga dynasty in the 13th century. But there are also myths which say that Lord Krishna's son Samba had leprosy but the Surya deity cured him up. In honour of Sun God, Lord Samba built this temple. The Temple has a chariot with twenty four wheels driven by seven horses. Thus it also depicts the 24 hours and 7 days.
A visitor will be amazed by its gigantic size and beautiful statues on each side of the temple. The front entrance consists of a lion on each side and I had a horrifying feeling that they would jump on me and eat me up! And I forgot to tell you people that Sun Temple has been included in the UNESCO world heritage sites. Anyway, I had to walk a bit far with my family to each staircase of the temple, but after this long tiring walk, the main view of the temple really pleased me.
Being entirely made of stone, the Sun Temple is a mixture of the aspects of life and its scene being described in the impressive stone carvings.
"Why can't we preserve our archaeological structures?" They show our enriched history and thus they can be great sources of tourist attraction.
