A court in Bogra yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in 2001.
The convict is Bipul Chandra Sarker, 26, of Vinjani village in Sherpur upazila. The court also fined him Tk 30,000, reports our staff correspondent.
According to prosecution, Bipul Chandra strangled his pregnant wife Swapna Rani, 22, to death following a family feud on July 31 in 2001.
Victim's brother Pranesh Chandra Sarker filed a case against three people.
After examining records and witnesses Additional District and Sessions Judge Nitai Chandra Saha handed down the verdict in a crowded courtroom.
The judge acquitted Suddan and Ullash of the charges as the prosecution could not prove the allegations brought against them.
Meanwhile, a Panchagarh court on Monday afternoon sentenced two youths to life-term imprisonment in a rape case, reports our Thakurgaon correspondent.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Kazi AM Joynal Abedin handed down the verdict in a crowed courtroom in presence of both the accused after examining necessary records and 14 witnesses of the case.
The court also fined them Tk 20,000 each, in default, to suffer another one year rigorous imprisonment.
The convicts are Md. Faruqe Hossain, 20, of Getherguri village and Mohammad Md. Harun, 19, of Khutakhali village under Boda upazila in Panchagarh district.
According to the prosecution, Faruqe raped a girl at a lonely place of Gatherguri village under the same upazila in the evening on 22 March in 2009 with the help of Harun.
Victim's father filed a case with Boda police station on 23 March in 2009 accusing the two youths under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Investigation officer of the case and also Sub-Inspector of Boda police station Mamunur Rashid submitted charge sheet against the accused.
In Pabna, a housewife was strangled at the village Baludia in Chatmohar upazila under the district yesterday, reports our correspondent.
The victim was identified as Shabana Khatum, 24, wife of Amirul Islam, 32, of the village.
Police arrested her husband and two others in connection with the killing.
Officer-in-charge of Chatmohar police station Sayed Shahid Alam said police recovered the body of Shabana from a water body in the village.
"We have found marks of injury in her neck," the OC said.
Quoting family sources the OC said, Shabana's husband Amirul married for second time without permission of his wife. As she protested it, he often tortured his wife.
On the fateful night, Shabana was strangulated to death and the body was dumped in the water body, the OC said.
Victim's father filed a case with Chatmohar police station.
Besides Amirul, police arrested Abul Hossain, 60, father of Amirul and Md. Babu, 25, Amirul's younger brother.
