Luthfor gets Labour ticket
Bangladeshi- born British national Luthfor Rahman secured the Labour Party ticket to contest the first ever election of the Executive Mayor of the Tower Hamlet Borough.
Luthfor got the highest votes among seven Labour Party candidates who were on the short list. About 1,000 Labour members select their candidates through secret ballots. Luthfor got almost double the votes than his nearest rival John Biggs. Other candidates were Michael Keath, incumbent councillor Helal Abbas, councillor Sirajul Islam, Rosna Mortuza and councillor Shiriya Begum.
Earlier, there had been lot of dramas in preparing the short list of the Labour candidates. It was believed that there was a move to prepare the Labour short list keeping the Bangladeshi-born British candidate out of the contest for the executive mayor of the Tower Hamlet Borough. The short list was also put in question following court interventions.
The election will be held in October. Since Bangladeshi-born British nationals dominate the Tower Hamlet Borough, the next month's election has created much interest among the voters.
