Sohel Taj back home
Awami League lawmaker Tanjim Ahmad Sohel Taj, who resigned June last year as state minister for home, returned from the United States yesterday amid speculations that he might be appointed as state minister for another ministry.
Highly placed sources told The Daily Star a week ago that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was reconsidering giving Sohel Taj charge of a ministry as a state minister.
They said Sheikh Hasina's close aides in the country and the US had been trying to convince Sohel Taj for a new post in the cabinet since he had resigned from the home ministry six months after taking oath as its state minister.
They even proposed him the vacant joint general secretary's post in the 73-member Awami League central committee, the sources added.
But till now, Sohel Taj has not given any positive nod to any of the proposals.
Asked about it, he told The Daily Star yesterday that taking of any new charge has some formalities.
"First come the proposals followed by making a decision and then oath taking…you know the formalities," he said, adding, "Fulfilling the commitments to the people of my constituency is more important at the moment."
"I have come to oversee and check on several projects I undertook for the overall development of my constituency," he said adding that he will join the parliament session this month.
Meanwhile, Tanjim Ahmad is still mentioned as a state minister (without portfolio) in the Bangladesh government website although he repeatedly claimed that his resignation had come into effect as per the constitution as soon as he tendered his resignation to the premier.
He was the youngest member in Hasina's cabinet.
Several thousand people of Gazipur-4 constituency welcomed Sohel Taj when he arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 5:30am. He went to his mother's residence at Banani spending some time with the welcoming party.
After his resignation, the Awami League lawmaker left for USA on June 9 last year and came back to the country on January 27 this year. After staying here for 19 days he went back to the US on February 15.
This time Sohel Taj intends to stay in the country for over a month.
