Jubo League leader held for extortion
A Jubo League leader was held in Manikganj yesterday on charge of extortion while six BCL cadres were rounded up the day before in Sirajganj for rowdiness.
According to our Manikganj correspondent, a Jubo League leader was held on extortion charge at Daulatpur yesterday. Police arrested him from Daulatpur upazila sub registry office while trying to realise illegal toll.
The arrestee was identified as Humayun Kabir Shawon, general secretary of Daulatpur upazila Jubo League.
Daulatpur upazila Sub Register Bozlur Rahman filed an extortion case against the Jubo League leader with the Daulatpur police station.
Contacted, Bozlur Rahman said that the Jubo League secretary went to his office five days ago and demanded Tk 20,000. As he refused to pay the toll he misbehaved with some staffs.
Humayun Kabir Shawon again went to the office yesterday and demanded the amount. The officials and vendors caught him and handed over to police, Bozlur Rahman said.
Officer-in-charge of Daulatpur police station Mamunur Rashid said, being informed, police went to the sub registry office and arrested Shawon at around 10:30am.
In Sirajganj, six Chhatra League (BCL) activists were arrested as they flexed muscles on the upazila health complex premises under Belkuchi upazila of the district on Monday evening.
The arrestees were identified as Jibon, Jabed, Mostafa, Mamun, Rashed and Kawsar, reports a correspondent.
Officer-in-charge Mostafizur Rahman of Belkuchi police station said upazila Chhatra League secretary Sajudul Islam Reza and upazila Torun League president Mithu Biswas were engaged in an internal feud over establishing supremacy in the area for a long time.
On Monday evening, a gang of 40 to 50 activists led by Reza were flexing muscles on the upazila health complex premises.
On information, police rushed to the spot, chased the gang and arrested six of them, he said.
