RU forms body to identify alleged war criminals
Rajshahi University authorities on Saturday formed an 11-member committee to identify people who committed war crimes and crimes against humanity on the campus during the Liberation War in 1971.
RU vice chancellor Prof M Abdus Sobhan formed the committee with syndicate member Prof Chowdhury Zulfikar Matin as its convenor.
Contacted the VC said that formation of the committee was necessary as the International War Crimes Tribunal sent a letter seeking information on persons who committed crimes during the 1971 war.
Other members of the committee are -- RU teachers Tofazzal Hossain Tarafdar, Abul Kashem, Shafikunnabi Samadi, Ananda Kumar Saha, Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan Sajal, Moloy Kumar Bhoumik, Sadekul Arefin Matin, Mahbuba Kaniz Keya, and Hasibul Alam Prodhan.
Prof Fayekuzzaman was made member secretary of the committee and asked to submit report in quickest possible time.
Fayekuzzaman told this correspondent that the committee began working soon after it was constituted and its first meeting would be held today.
In Netrakona, twelve alleged collaborators of Pakistani occupation forcers have been sued on charge of killing a freedom fighter, reports our correspondent.
Mohammad Ali Reza, nephew of late freedom fighter Badiuzzaman Mukta of village Narandra Nagar under Sadar upazila of the district filed the case with the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Netrakona Aminul Haque a few days ago.
The accused are Md. Obaidul Haque Tahar, 60, Ataur Rahaman Nani, 59, Shahidullah Pintu, 62, Shahidur Rahman Maju, 58, Md. Fazlur Rahaman, 68, Md. Yusuf, 61, Mister Mia, 58, Md. Hafizuddin Mir, 80, Md. Abdul Wahab Khan Ronu, 60, Md. Manik Mia, 58, Abdur Rashid, 60 and Farid Ahamed, 62, of different areas of Netrakona town.
The court took the case into cognizance and sent to the International War Crimes Tribunal.
The complainant in his petition stated that the accused picked up his nephew freedom fighter Badiuzzaman Mukta from Birampur Bazar under Sadar upazila and shot him dead at Mukterpara bridge in the town.
