Govt still in dark about Bangladeshi victims
Bangladesh Foreign Ministry was trying to collect information from Baghdad about the casualties of Bangladeshis but the move was facing difficulties due to disruption of telecommunication services in the troubled area.
Thirty people, including Bangladeshis, were killed and at least 22 others were injured yesterday in a fire at a hotel in the northern Iraqi city of Sulaimaniya, report agencies. The fire was probably triggered by a gas leak.
The Daily Star last evening tried to reach Bangladesh mission in Iraq over phone to know about the latest situation but did not get any response.
An official of the ministry last night told The Daily Star that Bangladesh mission in Baghdad tried to collect information over phone but failed as the telecommunication link was cut off due to the movements of US soldiers.
“We asked our mission to collect information about the incident and casualties and inform us as soon as possible,” said the official, adding that the mission was also trying to get information from other sources as well.
