Abductor cop held; cotton trader shot, robbed in city
A policeman was detained with one of his accomplices while trying to abduct two persons with Tk 30 lakh at Jatrabari in the capital yesterday.
Meanwhile, three muggers fired a shot at a cotton trader and snatched Tk 15.8 lakh from him at Kanchpur in the afternoon.
Police and locals chased and held the abductor policeman and one of his four associates near a petrol pump after two persons cried for help from a microbus at Jatrabari at about 7:00pm.
The arrestees are constable Ariful Haque of Rajarbagh Police Line and Mohammad Niamat, said Sub-Inspector Mosharraf Hossain, second officer of Jatrabari Police Station.
He said they rescued Sohagh and Russell with Tk 30 lakh. Police however could not ascertain the source of the money.
Identifying themselves as policemen, the gang of five forcibly picked them up in a microbus while they were on their way to Sayedabad from Fakirapool by a rickshaw. They were supposed to leave for Comilla from there, police said quoting Sohagh and Russell.
Meantime, three muggers riding a motorbike fired a shot at cotton trader Abul Kashem, 50, while he was waiting for a Narayanganj-bound bus at Kanchpur.
The criminals snatched a bag containing Tk 15.8 lakh from him and fled the scene.
Kashem was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Later, he was shifted to a clinic at Narayanganj after his condition improved.
A case was filed in connection with the incident but no arrest was made, said Badrul Alam, officer-in-charge of Siddhirganj Police Station.
