Helal panel sweeps polls
Major Gen (Retd) Helal Morshed Khan led 41-member panel made a clean sweep in the Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command Council elections held yesterday across the country after 10 years.
Helal was elected chairman of the council bagging 54,412 votes while Principal Ahad Ali Chowdhury who led another panel got 36,258 votes and Ismat Kadir Gama 10,854.
Other office bearers include vice-chairmen Mohammad Wahidur Rahman, Sultan Uddin Ahmed Raza, AM Habib Ullah Khan, Brig Gen (retd) Mohammad Mahmudul Haque, Mohammad Samsul Kawnain Kutub and Mohammad Abul Mansur and secretary general (finance and planning) Manwarul Haque Khan Lavlu and secretary general (welfare and rehabilitation) Munirul Haque.
A five-member election commission led by Cabinet Secretary Abdul Aziz conducted the election.
Liberation war affairs ministry made Helal Murshed Khan the convenor of the ad-hoc committee of the council on February 23, 2009 and directed to hold election within three months after formation of the ad-hoc committee.
