Jubo Dal leader jailed for extortion
A court here yesterday sentenced a Jubo Dal leader and three others each to six years rigorous imprisonment (RI) in an extortion case, court sources said.
The convicts are Tala upazila Juba Dal executive committee member Mantu Sheikh, Munna Sheikh, Refajul Islam Sheikh and Khalilur Rahman Sheikh, all hailing from Bara Kashipur village in Tala upazila, they said.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Court Judge Kazi Ehsanul Haque pronounced the verdict in a crowded courtroom, court sources said.
The accused led by Juba Dal leader Mantu Sheikh attacked Tarak Nath Biswas's house at Bara Kashipur village at night on March 20, 2004. They demanded Tk 5 lakh as toll from Tarak Nath at gun point. On refusal, the accused beat the inmates of the house severely, court sources said.
Tarak Nath filed a case with Patkelghata police station. Sub-inspector (SI) Daud of Patkelghata police station submitted charge-sheet against them on August 4, 2004.
