“Shesh Shonglap” to be staged today at Shilpakala Academy
A scene from the play.
Shomoy Natyadal's production, “Shesh Shonglap” will be staged today at Experimental Theatre Hall, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, at 7 pm, according to a press release.
“Shesh Shonglap” is an adaptation of “Sultanuj Jannam” (Sultan's Dilemma) written by Egyptian dramatist Tawfiq Al Hakim. Syed Jamil Ahmed and M. Saiful Alam Chowdhury jointly adapted the play in Bangla. Akhtaruzzaman is the director of the play.
The play begins with an executioner getting ready. The sentenced is a slave trader who has been boasting at the marketplace about how he had sold the Sultan for a thousand dinars 40 years ago. The result is predictable -- the Wazir (chief administrator) sentences him to death and the execution is to be carried out after the Fajr (morning) prayers.
The citizens are thoroughly confused, how can a Sultan be bought at an auction? Nevertheless, the public considers the Sultan as an exceptional ruler, under whose reign everyone is equal in the eyes of the law, including himself.
The play carries a message -- the rule of law should be respected under the gravest of circumstances.
The cast includes Pavel Islam, Eshita Chaki, Riaz Mahmud Jewel, Arifuzzaman, Fakhrul Islam and others.
