60 workers arrested in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi police arrested 60 Bangladeshi nationals last Monday on charges of residing over there illegally.
The police raided a six-storey building in the Tourist Club area and arrested them. The dilapidated building with 18 apartments, had hundreds of residents living in deplorable conditions, Gulf News reported quoting Abu Dhabi officials.
All those arrested were reported absconding by their sponsors. The Bangladesh embassy sources said they are in touch with the UAE authorities for more information about the case.
A Bangladeshi diplomat, who asked not be named, said sometimes it happens that Bangladeshi workers are found without proper documents. These mainly occur due to non-payment or irregular salary payment or very low salaries given by their employers.
He said basically these employers are not under the present wage protection system. But when such people get arrested, they will be repatriated by the embassy in cooperation with the UAE government.
