Cahill handed 1-match ban
FIFA on Thursday confirmed that Australian midfielder Tim Cahill will be suspended for one match after being given a straight red card in the World Cup match against Germany last weekend.
The Everton star will miss the Socceroos' match against Ghana in Rustenburg on Saturday, but will be available for selection for the match against Serbia in Nelspruit on June 23, FIFA said.
A FIFA Disciplinary Committee ruled that Cahill should get the minimum one match suspension for the straight red card.
Football Federation Australia (FFA) was relieved and pleased that the influential Cahill would only receive an automatic minimum one-match ban.
"Tim has been given the minimum penalty available which is what we argued for in our detailed submission to FIFA over the incident," FFA team official John Boultbee said.
