PM seeks more US investment
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday urged the United States to invest in Bangladesh in larger volume and laid emphasis on more US cooperation in energy and power sectors.
The request came when US Ambassador in Dhaka James F Moriarty called on the premier at her office in the morning.
The present government believes in press freedom and the press in the country is “enjoying highest freedom at present,” the PM told the US envoy.
Hasina also informed about her government's strong stand on alleviating poverty, which is the main enemy of the South Asian region, and against terrorism.
She said terrorism and militancy will not be allowed in Bangladesh and her government is very much firm in this regard.
Press Secretary to the PM Abul Kalam Azad briefed the reporters after the meeting.
Hasina and Moriarty discussed in details the issues of mutual interest and hoped that the existing friendly relations between the two countries will be further strengthened in future.
They also discussed the exploration of gas and coal in the country and the PM sought US cooperation in this regard.
She mentioned that communal harmony is prevailing in the country and the minority community is enjoying equal rights.
Hasina said the human rights situation is at the desired level and the government puts highest emphasis on the religious harmony.
“We are committed to secure human rights in the country,” she said.
Hasina also said the government is working hard for strengthening the parliamentary democracy in the country.
“The opposition is provided with immense scope in the parliament to have their say,” the premier said.
