Cultural show featuring performances by indigenous artistes

Indigenous artists performed their traditional songs and dances at a programme held at the auditorium of Zila Shilpakala Academy here on May 16. Artistes of Madhupur Mandi Sangskritik Shilpi Goshthi, including Swarna Mrong, Priya Mrong, Michi Mree, Salashree Kubi, Dhingsree Nokrek and Sengmi Mree, performed at the event. Mebul Monalisa Dar and Vicshan Nokrek conducted the show.
The artists rendered songs -- “Ami Ekjan Adibhasi Torun,” “Achhe Mor Konthey Adibashir Jai Gaan” and more.
Indigenous organisations of this region -- Joyenshahi Adibashi Samaj Kalyan Sangstha, Achik Michik Society, Hajang Mata Rashimoni Kalyan Parishad, Dhalu Adibashi Unnayan Sangstha, Indigenous Peoples Development Services, Society for Biodiversity Conservation and CARITAS, Mymensingh jointly arranged the programme.
A discussion, titled “Issues Regarding Land Ownership of the Indigenous People in Mymensingh Region and Solutions,” was held as part of the programme. The discussion was presided over by Ajoy Mree, president of Joyenshahi Adibashi Samaj Kalyan Sangstha.
Motiur Rahman, MP, was the chief guest at the programme. KM Khalid Babu, MP; Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin; chairmen of Muktagachha and Madhupur upazila, Advocate Badar Uddin Ahmed and Khandokar Abdul Gafur Montu respectively, spoke at the programme as special guests.
At the discussion, the Adibashi leaders demanded to form a separate land commission to solve the problems faced by the indigenous people.
The speakers also said that due to lack of separate land commission, certain people are grabbing the land of indigenous people. Many indigenous families have been rendered landless in the region.
Hundreds of indigenous people from Mymensingh, Tangail, Sherpur and Netrakona attended the programme.
