Nor'wester kills three in Rajshahi, Laxmipur
Two people were killed and over 100 others injured when a severe nor'wester lashed the city and other parts of the district on Friday evening.
Locals said, Shokhejan Bewa, 55, of Jhargram village in Bagmara upazila died in a tree collapse while returning home during the storm.
They said Ratan, 20, a first year student of Rajshahi University was killed as a thunderbolt struck him at about 7:00 pm. He hailed from Maria Sahapara village in Puthia upazila.
The injured are mostly women and children. They sustained injuries due to falling of tree branches and house collapse.
Besides, scores of houses and educational institutions were razed to the ground. Moreover, hundreds of trees were uprooted, electric poles twisted and extensive damage caused to standing boro crops, betel-leaf grounds and mango orchards during the storm in the district.
The worst affected villages in Bagmara upazila are Gonipur, Jhargram, Machmoil, Borobihanli, Jugipara, Maria, Taherpur, Bhobaniganj, Bashupara.
The other affected upazilas are Mohonpur, Paba, Godagari, Tanore, Bagha, Charghat of Puthia where houses were blown away or razed to the ground.
In Laxmipur district, a man was killed and over 300 trees were uprooted as a nor'wester hit Ramgati upazila on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Nurul Islam of Balurchar village of the upazila.
Witnesses said, Nurul Islam received serious injury as a tree fell on him during the storm. He was returning home from the local Wapda bazaar. Later he died in the morning when being taken to the hospital.
Over 100 thatched houses were damaged during the violent storm.
