Refrain from repression on opposition
BNP leaders yesterday urged the prime minister to refrain from any attempt to repress the opposition.
They made the call from a protest rally at Muktangon in the capital.
The leaders of the main opposition said they would launch a vigorous movement against the government to relieve people of their sufferings.
Party Chairperson Khaleda Zia would announce agitation programmes against the government from May 19 grand rally in Dhaka to “rescue democracy,” they said.
“Please try to understand that people have already said no to you,” BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told the rally, referring to the government.
The rally was presided over by Dhaka City Corporation Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka.
He alleged that Awami League has turned the country into a “death valley” while the government remains busy repressing opposition instead of working for people's welfare.
Dhaka city unit BNP organised the rally as part of a countrywide programme to protest the killing of BNP leader Zakir Hossain in Natore. He was allegedly attacked by AL activists on his way to Khaleda Zia's grand rally in Rajshahi on May 5.
The party observed half-day hartal in Bogra in protest of the killing.
BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain said the success of the hartal in Bogra proves that the government remains isolated from people.
He was talking to journalists at the party's central office in Naya Paltan in the afternoon.
Meantime, BNP brought out processions that marched towards Election Commission offices across the country demanding cancellation of Bhola by-poll results and resignation of the three election commissioners, report our correspondents from different districts.
Party leaders and activists gathered at the party office in Chittagong at about 11:00am and marched towards the EC office at Rahmatganj.
Police intercepted them in Jamalkhan, about 100 yards off the EC office. They held a brief rally there with city unit President Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury in the chair.
BNP leaders and activists marched towards the EC office in Barisal and held a rally on the office premises. BNP district unit General Secretary Nazrul Islam Khan presided over it.
Meanwhile, police intercepted a BNP procession near the EC office at Laxmipur Kacha Bazar in Rajshahi.
Later, BNP leaders led by city unit General Secretary Shafiqul Islam Milon submitted a memorandum to election officials to press home their demand.
