BNP to apply for registration after reforms in its constitution
Acting Secretary General of Saifur Rahman-led BNP Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed yesterday said the party will apply for registration after bringing necessary reforms to the constitution by holding a council session before the timeframe set by the Election Commission (EC).
The BNP leader was briefing journalists at his Banani residence.
Responding to the remarks made by the chief election commissioner (CEC) for bringing changes to the constitution of many political parties for obtaining registration, Hafiz said, "Mere utterances on democracy are not sufficient, that should be reflected in the constitution."
Dismissing the statement that there is no provision for acting chairperson in the party, Hafiz quoted a report published in 1987 in the Daily Ittefaq in which it was mentioned that Mirza Golam Hafiz performed the duty of the acting chairman in absence of Khaleda Zia. He said there are many instances of the acting secretary general in the BNP.
The acting secretary general of the BNP, however, called for intensifying relief operations in the cyclone-affected areas.
"We all should stand by the cyclone-hit people and that should be our prime task," he added.
