Cold storage held guilty in Dinajpur
The five-member probe committee in its report has said the authorities of Uttara Himgharh Ltd, a cold storage, are responsible for damage of thousands of bags stored potatoes as they (authorities) failed to arrange alternative power supply during outage as per previous assurance.
The report said the authorities should give compensation to the growers for their losses and blamed them (authorities) for overloading the cold storage without ensuring alternative source of power.
Agriculture Extension Officer of Dinajpur Sadar upazila Md Abul Hossain Talukdar, who headed the committee, submitted the report to the deputy commissioner's office on Tuesday evening.
Other members of the committee were Md Ansar Ali, assistant agriculture officer of Chehelgazi Block of Dinajpur Sadar, Md Mahbubul Alam, seeds officer of Protayan Agency-1, and Md Azizul Islam and Md Nazrul Islam, vice-president and general secretary of Krisak Kalayan Samity.
The farmers on Saturday blocked the Dinajpur-Dhaka highway as executive director of Uttara Him ghar Ltd Mirza Ashfaque refused to pay any compensation to the farmers who have stored potatoes in the cold storage.
Besides, the affected farmers yesterday held a press conference at Dinajpur Press Club and threatened to besiege the deputy commissioner office to realise their compensation.
