FAO to introduce community radio in Barguna
Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is going to set up the first community radio at Amtoli in Barguna aimed at better helping farmers increase productivity and attain sustainable agricultural development.
To this effect, the UN body has signed an agreement with the government on a project titled 'Enhancing Rural Communication Services for Agricultural Development through Community Rural Radio'.
Dileep Kumar Das, joint secretary of Economic Relations Division, and Ad Spijkers, FAO representative in Bangladesh, signed the agreement on Sunday, says a press release.
The project is the first of 12 radio initiatives cleared recently by the government under the Right to Information Act 2009.
FAO, in collaboration with agricultural information services (AIS) of the agriculture ministry, will set up the radio.
“We are very happy to initiate the community rural radio with AIS as it will strengthen the rural communication services for agriculture and food security,” Ad Spijkers said.
The community radio will play a key role for knowledge and information sharing on food security and climate change adaptation issues at community level, he added.
“An integrated master plan and robust investments for the agricultural development of that area is the key to bring back the southern Bangladesh as 'the food basket'. We have to explore the synergies of water, seeds and technologies,” said the FAO representative.
