Power planning
The Sri Lankan model of long term power planning was published on April 18 in a local daily, which should be applicable for any country.
But Bangladesh suffers from political extremism, all due to the shallow approach of our 'Ghar Tera' attitude of our political leaders.
In our politics, what is sauce for the goose, is poison (not sauce) for the gander! One reason may be that we have two 'geese'; and no gander leading our top two political parties The PDB's Board of Directors is full of 'chamchas' (the most successful way to climb the service ladder in Bangladesh!). The main criterion of competency at this level is giving and receiving 'palm grease'; and how effective one is in the 'yes sir, yes sir, three bags full sir' syndrome! Lubrication is the primary criteria of moving upwards in our country's management by the government!
Power needs are planned in Bangladesh on the ease of availability of 'under-the table cuts'. We have already stacked enough electric poles to more than double our transmission lines! Next, in that order, we will have thousands of miles of cables to distribute the power. After that, there will be enough High Tension (HT) and LT transformers and switchgears to provide power for distribution to all the towns of Bangladesh! Last of all, we will have power plants! However, by the time the power plants are commissioned, may be a decade hence, the poles, cables and transformers will have rotted away in storage! We will merrily then go for emergency purchase of these items.
This is how the Wise Women and their 'chamchas' manage Bangladesh.
