Transformer thieves tell their tale
Six members of a gang of power transformer thieves have confessed to stealing 100 transformers, most of them from Dhaka City Corporation area.
Divulging this sensitive information during remand on Tuesday, the arrested members of the gang said they get Tk one lakh for each transformer from the factories that make second-hand transformer.
They said the factories make three small second-hand transformers by breaking stolen one and these are sold to the Rural Electrification Board (Reb).
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Siddhirganj Police Station said the six arrested thieves gave confessional statements to police under Section 161 of the CrPC on the first day of their three days remand.
He said a section of dishonest officials of the Rural Electrification Board (Reb) might have links with the gang.
Siddhirganj police arrested the six members of the gang, raiding Kadamtoli area Saturday morning. The law enforcers also recovered a transformer, spare parts, electric cables and cutting machines from their possession.
Police also unearthed two factories that produce second-hand transformers.
