Couple slain in Khulna
A husband and his wife were killed in an apartment of a three-storey building in the restricted area of Khulna Power Station (KPS) at Goalpara under Khalishpur Police Station here yesterday.
The deceased were identified as senior security guard of KPS Niranjan Chandra Mandal, 55, and his wife Reba Rani Mandol, 42, of Moksedpur upazila in Gopalganj.
The bodies, a bloodstained hammer and a large knife were recovered from the bedroom at 10:00am. The weapons were used in the killings, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Mokaddem Ali of Khalishpur Police Station.
The murders were committed around 11:00pm on Tuesday after they fell asleep in a room on the ground floor of the building in the labour colony of KPS, he added.
Police picked up two sons of the deceased for interrogation on suspicion of their involvement as they were staying in another room.
The two sons are Rajib Chandra Mondol, a 2nd year student of Biotechnology department of Chittagong University, and Saju Chandra Mandol, who is an SSC examinee.
The OC said, "We suspected them as the door of the bedroom was found closed from inside when murders were committed. Circumstantial evidences do not prove that the murders were committed by any outsider."
The bodies of Niranjan and Reba were sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsies.
Viranjan served in KPS as a security guard since 1990, said KPS Chief Engineer Harchandra Nath Mandal. He demanded a fair investigation into the murders.
Bikash Chandra Bala, elder brother of slain Reba, lodged an FIR as a complaint with Khalishpur Police Station, accusing none in this connection.
