Plaques at Zia Udyan removed
Public Works Department (PWD) removed two nameplates from the city's Zia Udyan late last night.
The steal-made plaques were bearing the name of late president Ziaur Rahman after whom the Udyan was named.
“Fresh nameplates will replace the old ones,” A police official at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station told The Daily Star, quoting PWD Executive Engineer Abdul Hai.
When asked, the policed official said, “We went to the spot after being informed about it; we will file a general diary.”
The two nameplates were located on either side of the bailey bridge leading to Ziaur Rahman's grave.
The BNP government during its 1991-96 tenure renamed the Chandrima Udyan as Zia Udyan.
Six PWD hired labourers started removing the nameplates with hammer, spade and other equipment at 9:00pm and completed the job around 11.55pm.
