BNP terms it delayed step
Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque here yesterday raised doubt about the neutrality of Speaker Abdul Hamid.
He also termed "a late step" the speaker's recent move against unruly behaviour of lawmakers and use of indecent words on the floor of parliament.
Zainul asked, "Why didn't he [the speaker] take steps against the leader of the House and some senior lawmakers of treasury bench who made disrespectful remarks about late president Ziaur Rahman during our absence in the last sessions of parliament?"
He was addressing a discussion on "Present Perspective: Future of Democracy and Our Duty" organised by Swadhinata Forum Chittagong chapter at Chittagong Press Club in the afternoon.
The BNP leader said, "As our lawmakers started to provide some factual information to the House while responding to harsh comments made by ruling party MPs, the speaker warned of taking stern action."
"Why didn't he switch off the microphones of the ruling party MPs when they made rude comments about the body of Ziaur Rahman?" he asked.
Zainul said, “If the speaker wanted to make the House effective, he could have taken steps at that time.”
Speakers at the discussion blasted the government allegedly for "suppressing" the opposition political parties. They called for greater unity among the nationalist forces to forge tougher movement against the government's misrule.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Abdul Kader, National People's Party leader Sheikh Shawkat Hossain and Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) Secretary General Abu Naser Rahmat Ullah, among others, spoke on the occasion.
