Editors worried at threats to Nurul Kabir
Editors of different national dailies yesterday expressed concern over the death threats issued to the daily New Age Editor Nurul Kabir.
In a statement, the editors said, "With deep concern we are observing that the New Age editor is being threatened with life repeatedly. Nurul Kabir has already lodged a general diary with the police. The threats are being made from the same mobile phone over and over again."
Editor of The Independent Mahbubul Alam, Editor of the Ittefaq Rahat Khan, Editor of the Shamokal Golam Sarwar, Editor of the Prothom Alo Matiur Rahman, Editor of The Daily Star Mahfuz Anam, Editor of the News Today Reazuddin Ahmed, Editor of the Janakantha Atikullah Khan Masud, Editor of the Kaler Kantho Abed Khan, Editor of the Jugantor Salma Islam, Editor of the Inqilab AMM Bahauddin, Acting Editor of the Sangbad Khandaker Maniruzzaman, Editor of the Bhorer Kagoj Shamol Dutta, Editor of the Amader Samay Naimul Islam Khan, Acting Editor of the Jaijaidin Kazi Rokonuddin, and Chief Editor of the Manabjamin Matiur Rahman Chowdhury signed the statement.
"Nowadays, it is not difficult to identify criminals by tracking their mobile phones but lack of initiative on the police's part in this regard raises concern," the statement said.
"A threat to an editor is a threat to people's freedom of expression and the press. It is also an impediment to the growth of democracy," said the statement.
They hoped that quick steps would be taken by the administration in this regard.
