Operation theatre shut for 4 hrs
A four-hour long strike since 9:00am at the operation theatre, called by the anaesthetists of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, caused severe sufferings to the patients as at least 10 emergency and scheduled operations were not conducted during that time.
The anaesthetists went for strike after a doctor of surgery department Dr Rana with his colleague manhandled a anaesthetists Dr Abdur Rahman Palash on Saturday as he refused to work after his duty hours for two patients, said the hospital sources.
The anaesthetists went for strike in front of Operation Theatre Complex at DMCH in protest of the attack.
Borhan Ali, husband of a gynaecology patient Asma Begum, 46, told The Daily Star, "My wife was admitted to the hospital on February 11 and doctors fixed the date for her operation today [Sunday]. But it was not done and they said to wait for next schedule."
"We came from Sonargaon for her operation," he said adding the four hour-long strike delayed their probable return home within four days after the operation. "Now we don't know when we can go back where our kids are waiting for us."
However, Head of Anaesthesia Department of DMCH Shahera Khatun Bela told The Daily Star, "The operation was stopped for two hours and we made up for the last time by working extra hours."
She explained the cause of the strike that the anaesthetists were emotionally upset over the attitude of some colleagues.
There are 17 operating theatres at DMCH while 12 remain open from 8:00am to 2:00pm and rest five remain open round the clock.
