Saifur-led BNP forms relief body
The acting secretary general of the BNP, Maj (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed, yesterday said the government should tackle the disastrous situation in the aftermath of Cyclone Sidr even if it means bringing food from abroad.
He also urged the donor agencies to provide immediate assistance for the cyclone-hit people although the government has not yet asked for their help.
Hafiz made the call at a meeting where the Saifur Rahman-led BNP formed a 13-member relief team that will hand out emergency aid to people in the coastal districts, devastated by the catastrophic storm.
"We formed the relief team as the government said there is no bar to political parties distributing relief during the emergency in the country," Hafiz told reporters.
A section of the relief team, headed by Hafiz, left Dhaka for Bhola yesterday to begin relief work while the other members will go to Barguna and Patuakhali in groups today with relief materials.
