Salahuddin's son jailed for dodging tax
A Special Court yesterday handed down seven years' imprisonment to Tanvir Ahmed, son of former Demra lawmaker Salahuddin Ahmed of BNP, on three counts of tax evasion charges.
Judge Mohammad Ashraf Hossain of the Fifth Special Court, set up on the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban premises, issued the verdict against Tanvir, who is currently on the run.
The verdict also included Tk 8 lakh in fine. In default of which, Tanvir would have to serve an additional one and a half years in prison term.
Tanvir was sentenced to a year's imprisonment for not submitting his tax return for 2006-07 tax year, another one year for giving false information and five years' imprisonment for evading tax by concealing information in his tax return filed for tax years 1996-97 through 2005-06.
The court, however, ordered to make the sentences effective concurrently. As a result, Tanvir would have to serve a maximum of five years in prison.
The sentences were given under sections 164, 165 and 166 of Income Tax Ordinance, 1984.
M Moniruzzaman, assistant commissioner of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) filed the case against Tanvir on October 1 for evading Tk 7.11 lakh in tax by concealing Tk 30 lakh worth of wealth in his tax return filed for tax years 1996-97 through 2005-06 and for not submitting his tax return for 2006-07 tax year.
On November 5, Tanvir's mother Shamsunnahar and brother Imran Ahmed -- both absconding -- were sentenced to eight years' imprisonment each for tax evasion.
Meanwhile, the Fourth Special Court yesterday fixed November 26 for delivering verdict against former BNP lawmaker M Rashiduzzaman Millat while the Fifth Special Court fixed November 28 for delivering verdict against former DIG of Police Shahidullah in connection with two separate tax evasion cases filed by the NBR.
SALMAN, SOHEL SUED
Shinepukur Holdings Ltd Chairman Sohel F Rahman and Vice-Chairman Salman F Rahman along with company's two top officials were sued yesterday for giving false information about land property, reports our court correspondent.
Abdul Mannan, deputy registrar (current charge) of Joint Stock Companies & Firms (JSCF), filed the case with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court against Sohel, his brother Salman, company's Managing Director OK Chowdhury and Director Iqbal Ahmed.
In the complaint, Mannan mentioned that the accused submitted a statement to the JSCF on December 10 last year saying that they have 291.18 acres of land.
Although the JSCF had asked them to submit documents in support of their claim of the land property on October 25 and November 13 this year, they did not submit it.
It appears that the statements on land property submitted to the JSCF are false, the complainant added.
Metropolitan Magistrate Waliul Islam recorded the statement of the complainant but did not pass any order.
