Protest in Kolkata over Nandigram issue
The Indian army was called out to restore order in Kolkata yesterday after thousands of stone-pelting protesters demonstrated against using farmland for industry.
The Marxist state government made the announcement after police fired tear gas to break up the protests by around 5,000 mainly Muslim people in the West Bengal capital.
"Six army columns have been called into the troubled area to control the angry protesters," said state Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Roy in the eastern city.
At least one person was killed and 36 were injured in the clashes and more than 200 people were arrested, police said.
The protest was called by a Muslim group against bloodshed in the state's majority-Muslim Nandigram district in which 34 people have died and thousands have been left homeless since January.
